Meeting of PLO factions to discuss elections in Jerusalem

“A meeting of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) factions would be held at noon on Monday in Ramallah city in the West Bank to discuss the issue of the Palestinian elections,” member of the PLO Executive Committee, Wasel Abu Youssef, said.

Abu Youssef said in a special statement to Safa that the meeting will discuss the issue of holding elections in Jerusalem, in light of the refusal of Israel to pledge not to obstruct it.

He added that "If the Israeli government refuses to hold elections in Jerusalem, there will be no elections," stressing that the Palestinian leadership continues its contacts with international parties to pressure Israel to ensure that elections are held in the Holy City as a candidate, election, and electoral propaganda.

A member of the Executive Committee of the PLO and the Central Committee of the Fatah movement, Azzam al-Ahmad, announced that a meeting of the Executive Committee, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, would be held within days to discuss the Jerusalem file and holding elections there.

“Palestinians will not accept elections without including Jerusalem, under any circumstances,” said al-Ahmed.

He considered that holding Palestinian elections without Jerusalem "is a political implementation of Trump Peace Plan, and undermining any future talk about the city being the capital of the Palestinian state."

"Jerusalem is the core of the Palestinian cause, and Israel should allow Palestinian elections to be held there in accordance with the signed bilateral agreements, and the international community must seriously intervene in the matter," al-Ahmed added.

The elections are scheduled to take place in 3 phases: legislative on May 22, presidential on July 31, and elections to the National Council on August 31.
