International experts call for actions to protect the Palestinians from settlers' violence

UN experts of human rights called on the international society to impose deterrent measures on the Israeli occupation, to force Israel to stop its settlement project, and to protect the Palestinians from the settlers' violence.

"The settlers' violence against the Palestinian citizens in the West Bank notably increased in the last months," the experts said in a statement about the settlers' violence and their ongoing attacks resulting from the absence of accountability.

They mentioned that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs documented 771 accidents by the settlers that caused the injury of 133 Palestinians, the destruction of 9646 trees, and 184 vehicles in Hebron, Jerusalem, Nablus, and Ramallah last year.

More than 210 incidents of violence committed by the settlers were documented during the first three months of 2021.

The experts called on the Israeli army and police to investigate those incidents and prosecute the perpetrators, noting that the settlers' violence is stemmed out of ideological motivations and designed to occupy Palestinian lands and intimidate the Palestinians.

"Violence and intimidation prevent the Palestinians from reaching their lands and create an environment forcing them to stay away from certain areas," they said.

They expressed worries about the reports stating that more than 70 families living in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood are threatened to be evacuated to build new settlements instead.

"We are worried about the culture of impunity as no enough procedures were taken to protect the Palestinians from the settlers' violence. This creates a racist and discriminatory methodology for security and military protection in the West Bank," they added.

They considered that the international law calls on Israel to protect the Palestinian citizens living under its authority. Article 27 (Jeneva agreement) states that the protected citizens must be dealt with in a humanitarian way in all cases, and must be protected from all acts of violence and threats.
