Palestinian detainee died of cancer in Israeli jail

The Palestinian detainee Kamal Abu Wa’er died Tuesday in Israeli jails due to medical negligence, according to Waed Association for Detainees and Ex-Detainees.

Abu Wa'er health started to deteriorate last week while he was held in al-Ramleh hospital.

The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Committee had stated that the cancer patient was suffering from serious deterioration in his health as he had pain in his neck and head. He couldn't speak so writing was the way he used to communicate.

However, Israeli authorities refused to release him despite many calls made for his immediate release, resulting in worsening his condition.

Abu Wa'er, 46, from the town of Qabatiya in the northern West Bank, was detained in 2003 and is serving a lifetime in prison.

By his death, the number of Palestinian detainees who died in Israeli jails since 1967 is 226.
