The Sabbagh family from Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood is at risk of imminent forced eviction due to forged papers signed by Israeli law, marking a new Nakba since 71 years.
The Sabbagh family lost its home in 1948. In 1956, following an agreement between the Kingdom of Jordan and UNRWA, they were among 28 Palestine refugee families who were accommodated in a housing project in the Karm Al Jaouni area.
The Sabbagh family, 32 members, lives in fear and anxiety due to the threat of forced eviction from their homes where they lived for almost 63 years.
The Sabbagh family told SAFA that they were notified by the Israeli Law that they had until 24 November to vacate their home.
There are 72 Palestinian families, including 400 people, living in the neighborhood, and about 10 Jewish families reside next to them after they seized the Palestinian homes. They have surveillance towers, special guarding, surveillance cameras, and gardens for their children only.
Muhammad al-Sabbagh, one of those families, says that he was shocked by the lawyer calling him yesterday to inform him of a decision by the Magistrate’s Court to stop freezing the eviction decision, and the issuance of a decision to evacuate him and his four brothers from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
Thirty-two members of the Sabbagh family currently reside in the family home without compensation or provision made for alternative housing.
The coordinator of the National Coalition for Human Rights in Jerusalem, Zakaria Odeh, explains that one of the sensitive issues in the city of Jerusalem is the issue of the eviction of families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem for the benefit of the settlement associations.
In January 2019, the Sabbagh family were notified by the Israeli Law that they had to vacate their home. The decision was temporally delayed the eviction on procedural grounds.
Odeh noted that the Court issued decisions in September and November, this year, to evacuate 7 Jerusalemite families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, except the Sabbagh families.
