Support for Israel among Americans has reached its lowest level in 25 years, according to a new survey, highlighting a significant shift in public opinion.
The poll found that only 46% of Americans sympathise with Israelis, a five-point drop from last year’s 51%. Meanwhile, support for Palestinians has risen to 33%, the highest level ever recorded.
The divide is particularly stark along political lines. Among Democrats, 59% back Palestinians, while just 21% support Israel. In contrast, 75% of Republicans favour Israel, compared to only 10% for Palestinians. The survey also reveals that 55% of Americans support a so-called two-state solution, marking a return to 2020 levels, the highest recorded since 2003. A record 76% of Democrats, 53% of independents, and 41% of Republicans now support an independent Palestinian state.
The growing disillusionment with Israel comes over a year after it launched its devastating war on Gaza, which has killed at least 48,446 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Despite failing to achieve its declared objectives, Tel Aviv has continued its onslaught, while the US has provided it with billions in military aid.
