Ashrawi welcomes the adoption of four UN General Assembly resolutions

Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), welcomed yesterday the adoption of four UN General Assembly resolutions affirming the international consensus on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, saying this should be matched with holding Israel to account.

Ashrawi welcomes the adoption of four UN General Assembly resolutions affirming the international consensus on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. These resolutions, which cover the peaceful resolution of the Question of Palestine, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian people, Division for Palestinian Rights of the Secretariat, and the Special Information Program on the Question of Palestine, will be followed by others in the coming days on various aspects of Palestinian rights.

She affirms that together, these resolutions reflect the will of the majority of the international community to respect and consolidate the rules-based global order. They also serve as a reminder of the need to defend this order from the disruptive policies and actions of regimes that choose to defy the universality of international law and human rights.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian people appreciate this principled support. At the same time, they call on all states to reflect these supportive votes in their policies and relationship with Israel, the belligerent occupier. Absent accountability, Israel will continue to make a mockery of these resolutions and undermine the standing of international law. The occupier must face real and actionable consequence for its abject disregard for the internationally-recognized national and human rights of the Palestinian people.

Ashrawi also calls on all states to ensure that Israel's continued and systemic violations of UN resolutions and Palestinian rights come at a price that compels the occupier to change course. Immediate and corrective measures are also needed to hold to account states that encourage the occupier to maintain its path of impunity and illegal conduct, including those that openly defy relevant General Assembly and Security Council resolutions regarding occupied Jerusalem and the illegal Israeli settlements."
