Francesca Albanese Urges UK to Act After Israeli Forces Seize Humanitarian Ship Bound for Gaza

United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has condemned Israel’s seizure of the humanitarian vessel Madeleine in international waters, calling on the British government to take swift diplomatic action for the release of the ship and its detained crew. The Madeleine, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was on a mission to deliver aid to Gaza when it was intercepted by Israeli naval forces and towed to Ashdod Port.

“This vessel posed no threat to Israel’s security,” Albanese stated, asserting that Israel has no legal authority to board a civilian ship in international waters. “The UK must urgently demand an explanation and ensure the safe and immediate release of all those on board, who were engaged in a lawful humanitarian effort.”

Activists aboard the Madeleine had issued distress calls shortly before communication was cut, preparing life jackets in anticipation of what they described as an imminent assault. Footage shared by the coalition shows the moment Israeli commandos took control of the ship, in an operation confirmed by Israeli military sources.

What was meant to be a lifeline to the besieged people of Gaza has now become another chapter in the ongoing obstruction of humanitarian efforts. The seizure of the Madeleine sends a chilling message to global civil society: that even peaceful attempts to deliver aid to starving civilians can be met with armed force, detention, and silence.

The flotilla’s mission was not only to deliver food and medicine, but to break through the wall of indifference that surrounds Gaza. For now, the ship remains impounded and its crew in custody، another glaring example of how international law is flouted when it comes to Palestine, while governments that could speak up remain reluctant to act.
