A Light for Gaza: French Official Calls for Eiffel Tower to Honour Palestinian Lives

In a rare act of political courage, Stéphane Troussel, President of Seine-Saint-Denis and Socialist Party spokesperson, has urged France to illuminate the Eiffel Tower in the colours of Palestine. His call comes as Gaza descends deeper into catastrophe, with tens of thousands of civilians killed or maimed under relentless Israeli bombardment.

Troussel’s demand is more than symbolic. It challenges the double standards that allow monuments to glow for some tragedies while ignoring others. “Every life matters,” he declared, criticising the French government’s hesitation to recognise the State of Palestine and its silence in the face of mounting war crimes.

He addressed an open letter to the Eiffel Tower’s management, calling on them to take a stand. “Lighting the tower would show that France sees the suffering of Palestinians, not just their silence under rubble,” he wrote. Troussel also recently boycotted the Paris Air Show due to the presence of Israeli arms companies.

As Gaza's skies remain lit by missiles, his appeal is a reminder that symbols do matter, especially when they shine for justice.
