The head of the General Federation of Trade Unions in Gaza, Sami Al-Amsi, said on Thursday that the Israeli occupation is taking advantage of the climatic conditions to destroy 25% of the agricultural production in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Amsi considered, in a press statement that reached Safa, that the occupation’s opening of water ferries and dams east of the cities of Gaza and Beit Hanoun is a deliberate crime to hit agricultural production in the Strip.
He added that Israel frequently targets the eastern agricultural regions of the Strip, which represent 25% of agricultural production.
The farmers' losses resulting from these attacks and the recent depression amounted to 1.5 million dollars.
The agricultural lands that were flooded with rainwater due to the opening of the ferries are estimated at 600 dunums in eastern Gaza and 100 dunums east of Beit Hanoun.
Al-Amsi indicated that Israel flooded farmers' lands for the second time within a month, by opening ferries and water dams. As a result, farmers suffered huge losses.
These losses had a large impact on agricultural production in the Gaza Strip in general, as they deprived thousands of farmers of their daily food and exacerbated their living suffering.
The trade union leader called on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO" and the Red Cross to pressure Israel to stop targeting farmers' lands and crops.
