Ben-Menachem: Israel might grands Abbas a chance to cancel elections

Yoni Ben-Menachem, Research at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and Chief Editor of the Israel Broadcasting Authority stated on Tuesday that Israel is concerned about Hamas winning in the upcoming elections of the Legislative Council.

The United States, Egypt, and Jordan are also concerned about the winning of Hamas in the elections, according to Ben Menachem.

He reported that Israel's prevention of the conduct of elections in Jerusalem will give Mahmoud Abbas, the current president of Palestine, a chance to cancel elections.

The Palestinian elections will strengthen the power of Hamas in the regions of the West Bank as this will affect Israel's security interests, according to Israeli resources.

Resources mentioned that Hamas will enter the elections with a united list while Fatah suffers from fragmentation.

Hamas filed a list of figures from Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza to the Central Election Committee yesterday. It is expected that Fateh will submit its list tomorrow.
