Ashkenazi fears the winning of Hamas in the Palestinian elections

Gabi Ashkenazi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed worries about the internal division of the Fateh movement which might weaken the organization Mahmoud Abbas belongs to. 

Ashkenazi discussed with Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, discussed fears of Hamas winning the presidential legislative elections which will be held next month, according to the Walla website. 

Israel and America refrain from stating that to be not accused of failing the elections. 

Ashkenazi claimed that Israel will hinder the conduct of elections. 

Blinken and Ashkenazi discussed last Friday the possibilities of Hamas winning the elections. 

Blinken claimed that his country does not refuse the Palestinian elections. 

Israeli officials stated that America and Israel will be happy if the Palestinians themselves delayed the elections. 

Israeli fears that the administration of Joe Biden will not prioritize the Palestinian elections file, Walla website stated. 

"Conducting democratic elections is a matter of the Palestinians," the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated. 

"Washington believes that whoever participates in the elections must recognize Israel and respect the previous agreements," an official in the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. 

President Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree to conduct the elections on three levels: legislative, presidential, and then completing the national council. 

 The last elections conducted for the Legislative Council were in 2006, which ended with the winning of Hamas, while the last presidential elections were in 2005 and ended with the winning of Mahmoud Abbas.
