Hamas has expressed strong surprise over recent comments made by U.S. envoy Steve Weitecov, accusing him of misrepresenting its position and undermining ongoing mediation efforts. In a statement released late Thursday, the Palestinian resistance movement reaffirmed its commitment to reaching a permanent ceasefire and described its latest response to mediators as "constructive and sincere."
The group stated that its reply was the product of extensive consultations with Palestinian factions, regional allies, and international mediators. Contrary to Weitecov’s claims of bad faith, Hamas underscored that its approach was rooted in cooperation and a genuine desire to bring an end to the bloodshed in Gaza.
Weitecov’s remarks came as the U.S. pulled its negotiating team from Doha, citing frustration with Hamas’s position. He also hinted at exploring “alternative options,” a phrase widely viewed by Palestinians as a thinly veiled threat of continued military escalation.
However, Hamas's response was welcomed by mediators, who reportedly described it as a positive step. Palestinian-American analyst Bishara Bahbah echoed that sentiment, calling Hamas’s reply “realistic and sincere,” and urging Israel to engage seriously in order to spare further suffering.
Meanwhile, Israel recalled its negotiation team to Tel Aviv, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen. For the 658th consecutive day, civilians, particularly women and children, remain under bombardment, famine tightens its grip, and the blockade suffocates all hope of relief.
As international mediators continue to search for a breakthrough, Palestinians insist that the path to peace lies not in distortion or delay, but in ending the siege, halting the killing, and upholding justice for a people long denied it.
