Postponing elections will affect future of Palestinian reconciliation, warns Hamas official

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas reaffirmed its rejection to postponing Palestinian general elections under any pretext.

In a press remarks, Hamas deputy chief abroad Mousa Abu Marzouq warned against canceling the Palestinian vote, stressing: “It would have repercussions on the future of Palestinian reconciliation.”

Abu Marzouq reiterated his movement’s constant position on holding the Palestinian election in occupied Jerusalem.

“We cannot act at the behest of the Israeli occupation,” Abu Marzouq continued. “This a Palestinian matter. Caving-in to the Israeli position means acknowledging its sovereignty over this holy land.”

Abu Marzouq explained the Palestinian popular intifada (uprising) in Jerusalem indicated that Palestinian Jerusalemites are capable of forcing the Israeli occupation to accept holding the Palestinian elections in the holy city.

“Jerusalem should be the core of the [Palestinian] struggle and the basis for national partnership,” he stressed.

The Hamas official dismissed the justifications to postpone the Palestinian vote as “unrealistic.”

Abu Marzouq called for going ahead with the Palestinian elections with its three stages at the factional and popular levels.

He explained that Hamas wants “a way out of this national impasse.”

“We want our Palestinian people to have a peaceful transition of power and hold inclusive elections at all levels without facing obstructions,” Abu Marzouq concluded.
