JSC: 5 journalists held in Israeli prisons under administrative detention

Journalist Support Committee (JSC) said that five Palestinian journalists are being held in Israeli prisons under administrative detention.

In a statement, a copy of which obtained by Safa, JSC denounced the issuance of an administrative detention order for a period of 3 months against the journalist Alaa al-Rimawi, who was arrested by the occupation forces after raiding his home in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

It stated that it had recorded 16 cases of issuing an administrative detention order against imprisoned journalists in the occupation prison since the beginning of 2021.

Meanwhile, it indicated that al-Rimawi began an open hunger strike against his arbitrary detention, which led to the deterioration of his health condition.

The committee also denounced the decision of the Ofer Occupation Court to renew for the third time the administrative detention of Osama Hussein Shaheen from Hebron for a period of two months.

It underlined that the policy of extending the detention of journalists is a serious violation of human rights principles, especially Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and constitutes a violation of the rules of international humanitarian law.

JSC pointed out that after the release of the journalist Musab Saeed, who was an administrative detainee, 5 of the journalists are still in administrative detention without charge.

The committee called on international institutions working in the field of human rights or international legal institutions to impose international protection for journalists and media institutions from the repeated attacks of the occupation against them.
