Human rights organizations urge international commissions to protect Palestinian activists in West Bank

Dozens of human rights organizations sent a mutual letter to international commissions of the United Nations to urge them to act and provide protection for the activists and defenders of human rights in the Palestinian territories in the wake of the escalating inflammatory campaigns.

In the letter, they confirmed the need for the intervention of the UN's experts to force the Palestinian Authority to provide the activists and journalists with protection.

The letter said that dozens of campaigns were launched to document journalists, activists, and human rights figures, noting that 8 figures were exposed to threats and incitement; Issam Abdeen, Essa Amro, Naela Khaleel, Emad Abo Awwad, Alaa Al-Remlawi, Fatema Mashaala, Aqeel Awawda, and Samar Hamad.

It noted that the mentioned characters are in serious danger after the assassination of Nezar Banat on June 24 after being arrested by the Palestinian Security Forces in the West Bank.

It stated that applying justice and international accountability for the assassination of Nezar Banat will be a crucial procedure to deter the continuation of these brutal violations.

It said that the activist Nezar Banat was a well-known critic of the Palestinian Authority on social media as well as a candidate of the Palestinian Parliament Elections, supposed to be held on May 22 yet delayed to an unspecified time by President Mahmoud Abbas.

It highlighted that Nezar Banat's practice of his freedom of expression exposed him to various campaigns of detention and intimidation by the Palestinian Security Forces.

"Despite the Palestinian Authority's announcement of forming an investigation committee, we can conclude that this step is no more than an attempt to calm the Palestinians' anger and gain time to bury the cause without holding the perpetrators into accountability," the letter said.

"What confirms this evaluation is the fact that the Palestinian Authority did not take any serious procedures to give real results of the establishment of the investigation committee," it added.

The organizations that signed the letter expressed their deep concerns about the risky ongoing deterioration of independence and integrity of the Palestinian system of justice because of the executive authority's intervention, the authority of President Mahmoud Abbas. This was documented several times by different human rights organizations.

The letter warned that what happened to Nezar Banat might reduce the freedom of speech and expression in the Palestinian territories as it is like a letter of intimidation and threat to other activists.

It also expressed deep concerns about the safety of the highlighted Palestinian activists and critics of the Palestinian Authority who were exposed to multiple campaigns of intimidation, incitement, and detention to silence them.

It also documented a campaign of brutal detention and attacks that targeted peaceful protestors and journalists while demanding the application of justice in the cause of Nezar Banat's assassination and the cessation of violating freedom of speech and expression.

"We noted an increase in the anger, fear, and despair among the Palestinian activists and civil-society organizations, and deep doubts of the Palestinian Authority's will to take serious procedures that apply justice for Nezar Banat's family," the organizations signed the letter said.
