Hamas condemns the campaign of arrests by the PA security authorities against human rights defenders

The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas condemned the arrest campaigns, intimidation and attacks carried out by the PA security authorities against human rights defenders, journalists, and demonstrators against the assassination of political activist Nizar Banat.

"The intimidation carried out by the authorities services, whether in their official uniform or in civilian clothes, will not succeed in silencing the voice calling for the need to hold those behind the murder of the activist "Banat" accountable, and it requires a serious stance from the leadership of the authority and the government to form a transparent investigation committee agreed upon by all parties and hold the perpetrators accountable," the movement said in a statement.

"The arrest of lawyer Muhannad Karaja, and the arrest of journalist Alaa al-Rimawi and his transfer from the Ramallah Public Prosecution Office to the city of Hebron, and the continuation of systematic incitement against him through social media platforms, which carries real danger to him. Besides the assault on the activist and candidate for the legislative elections Ghassan Al-Saadi requires a collective stance from jurists, journalists, and all the forces of our people to prevent attacks on journalists and activists against the background of their journalistic work and to demand their integrity and transparency," it added.

"Freedom of opinion and expression is a right guaranteed by the Palestinian law, and we call on the leadership of the Palestinian Authority and the leadership of the services to resort to the language of reason and to start practical measures to hold accountable those behind the political crime and to stop pursuing journalists and demonstrators."
