Hasna told Safa "UNRWA's financial crisis might reduce the services provided to refugees"

UNRWA's Unprecedented Financial Crisis

Spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Adnan Abu Hasna has stated that UNRWA's financial crisis may effect the assistance provided to Palestinian refugees.

Abu Hasna told "Safa" agency, on Thursday before the meeting between the UNRWA's Commissioner-General and heads of employee unions, that the decision to pay certain amounts of its employees' salaries is temporarily, not permanently.

The UNRWA Commissioner-General announced, this week, a partial delay in paying the salaries of 28,000 employees, including health care workers and teachers, over the lack of funds.

Abu Hasna confirmed that great efforts are being made to filling the fiscal deficit without reducing the services provided to refugees or the salaries of employees.

He revealed that UNRWA requires $70 million to provide salaries to its employees till the end of the next year.

Over 5.7 million refugees expressed concern that UNRWA's financial crisis may lead to reduce the services provided to them for decades.

Abu Hasna did not specify the sectors expected to be affected by the financial crisis, indicating that this is related to decisions taken by the Commissioner-General of "UNRWA", pointing out that this crisis is mainly related to this month.

The United States cut its aid to the UNRWA, 26 months ago, after its financial help for nearly 70 years.

Abu Hasna said that having enough funds is not an easy matter at all because of the Corona crisis and other political issues.

It is mentioned that over the past five years, UNRWA has taken measures by reducing its services and programs by $500 million, as the UN agency cut an amount of $97 million from its regular budget estimated at $806 million this year.
