A Bloody Year: 65 Palestinian Journalists Killed in 2024

The Palestinian Centre for the Protection of Journalists (PCPJ) reported on Tuesday that 65 Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza during 2024, making it the second deadliest year for Palestinian journalists.

In its statement, the PCPJ noted that this follows 2023, when 132 journalists and media workers were killed in the Gaza Strip. The centre condemned the Israeli military as the primary threat to journalists, warning of the devastating long-term impact on journalism not only in Palestine but globally.

The centre also highlighted the systematic targeting of journalists’ homes by Israeli forces, leading to the deaths of dozens of family members.

Since 7 October 2023, the initial figures reveal that 196 journalists have been killed, 396 injured, and 40 detained, while 524 family members of journalists have also lost their lives as a result of Israeli aggression.

On Tuesday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confirmed that “Israel” was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist deaths worldwide in 2024. The CPJ condemned the targeting of four Palestinian journalists recently killed in Gaza: Ahmed Al-Louh, Mohammed Al-Qirinawi, Mohammed Balousha, and Eman Al-Shanti.

The Israeli occupation’s genocidal campaign in Gaza has now persisted for 438 days, leaving a trail of massacres, war crimes, and destruction that continues to devastate civilians and displaced families.
