Dr Hussam Abu Safia, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has issued an urgent plea to the international community to intervene and stop the ongoing "Israeli" attacks on the hospital. He emphasised the need to safeguard the healthcare system, its workers, and the vulnerable patients inside.
In a press statement, Dr Abu Safia detailed the aggression, reporting that yesterday, without warning, "Israeli" tanks and bulldozers advanced towards the hospital’s western entrance under a barrage of gunfire targeting the building and its departments.
He revealed that bullets had penetrated critical areas, including the intensive care unit, the maternity ward, and the specialised surgery department. While medical staff swiftly moved patients to safer corridors, some bullets exploded within the hospital, causing fear and panic among patients and staff alike.
The assault also damaged essential infrastructure. Dr Abu Safia confirmed that one of the hospital’s generators was completely destroyed by gunfire, while attempts were made to target the fuel tank. Thankfully, the latter did not explode, averting further catastrophe.
"We currently have 91 patients in the hospital, including elderly individuals, children, and women," he stated. "Despite the dire conditions, we are still providing the minimum level of services."
Dr Abu Safia highlighted the hospital’s repeated appeals for protection and humanitarian aid, including the establishment of safe corridors to bring in essential supplies. "So far, we have only received a fraction of the aid needed. We continue to call on the international community to uphold its humanitarian obligations and protect us."
He concluded with a grave warning: "The daily threats we face are relentless. The bombardment surrounds us, impacting the building, departments, and staff. This is an extraordinarily dangerous and terrifying situation. The world must recognise that our hospital is being deliberately targeted to kill and forcibly displace."
