Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA Commissioner-General, condemned Israel's actions in Gaza, stating that the country is violating every rule of war in what he described as an ongoing genocide that has lasted for over 14 months. Lazzarini highlighted the frequent Israeli attacks on schools and hospitals, emphasizing that such violations have become routine and should not be accepted by the international community.
In a statement on X, Lazzarini pointed out that the world has witnessed repeated bombings of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, residential buildings, and schools, as well as the denial of essential supplies like water, food, medicine, and fuel. Despite these violations, the international response has been slow, and the much-needed ceasefire remains delayed.
Since the onset of the Israeli aggression on October 7, 2023, airstrikes have devastated Gaza, leaving behind an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. With nearly 153,000 Palestinians killed or injured, the majority of whom are women and children, and over 10,000 missing, the situation in Gaza is dire. The blockade, coupled with the destruction of infrastructure, has caused widespread famine, further exacerbating the suffering of an already devastated population. This ongoing crisis is now regarded as one of the worst humanitarian disasters globally.
