NGO: Israeli Occupation Silences Journalists with War Crimes

The Palestinian Centre for the Protection of Journalists (PJPC) has accused Israeli occupation forces of systematically committing war crimes against journalists in the Gaza Strip. These violations, according to the PJPC, have reached unprecedented levels, setting a grim record for journalist casualties in modern warfare.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the PJPC revealed that 66 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks in 2024 alone. Hundreds more have been injured, and dozens have been detained. The organisation further highlighted that the targeting of journalists' homes has led to the deaths of family members and relatives.

The PJPC stressed that these actions are part of a deliberate campaign to silence Palestinian media and obstruct the global exposure of Israel’s alleged war crimes. It described these acts as a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law and human rights, which uphold the freedom of opinion and expression and guarantee the safety of journalists in their work.

The NGO reiterated that targeting journalists constitutes a grave violation of the Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols, which offer protection to civilians, including humanitarian and media workers, during armed conflicts.

The statement condemned the international community's ongoing silence in the face of these crimes, arguing that this inaction emboldens Israel to persist in its violations. The PJPC warned that such silence undermines trust in the international legal and human rights systems.
