Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was detained by Israeli forces during a raid on the facility in late December 2024. This hospital was the last major operational medical center in northern Gaza, providing critical healthcare services amid ongoing conflicts.

Eyewitnesses report that during the raid, Israeli soldiers subjected Dr. Abu Safiya to physical assault, including severe beatings and humiliation in front of other detainees. He was subsequently transferred to the Sde Teiman detention facility in southern Israel, a site notorious for reports of detainee mistreatment. 

Family members and human rights organizations have expressed grave concerns about Dr. Abu Safiya's well-being, citing reports of torture leading to a significant deterioration in his health. His family has been unable to communicate with him since his detention, heightening fears for his safety.

The Israeli military alleges that Kamal Adwan Hospital was being utilized by Hamas militants for activities against Israel, a claim that has been met with skepticism by international observers. The World Health Organization and other human rights entities have condemned the raid and the detention of medical professionals, emphasizing the critical need to protect healthcare facilities and personnel in conflict zones. 

The international community is calling for immediate and transparent investigations into Dr. Abu Safiya's detention and treatment, urging adherence to international humanitarian laws that safeguard medical personnel during conflicts. The situation remains dire, with the closure of Kamal Adwan Hospital exacerbating the already critical healthcare crisis in northern Gaza.

Amidst the growing concerns over the disappearance of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Israeli army has claimed it does not possess any official documentation regarding his detainment. On January 2nd, a spokesperson for the Israeli military stated that they had no record of his whereabouts and that he was not in their custody. This statement has sparked further confusion and outrage, with many questioning the transparency of the Israeli military's actions and the safety of medical professionals detained during the ongoing conflict. The ambiguity surrounding his detention only adds to the mounting anxiety surrounding Dr. Abu Safiya’s fate.
