Medical Negligence Claims the Life of Palestinian Detainee Moataz Abu Zneid

Moataz Mahmoud Abu Zneid, a 35-year-old administrative detainee from Dura city in Hebron, died in Soroka Hospital due to medical negligence in Israeli prisons.

Detained in Rimon prison, Abu Zneid's health severely deteriorated while the prison administration deliberately delayed his transfer to the hospital. He fell into a coma before finally being transferred to Soroka Hospital on 6 January, succumbing to his dire condition on 12 January 2025. His family confirmed he had no pre-existing health conditions prior to his detention on 27 June 2023. He leaves behind a wife and one child.

Abu Zneid’s death raises the toll of Palestinian detainees killed in Israeli prisons since the onset of the Gaza genocide to 55, marking the bloodiest period since 1967. He is the fifth administrative detainee killed since the genocide began, with many Gaza detainees reportedly subjected to enforced disappearance.

A former prisoner detained five times, primarily under administrative detention, Abu Zneid had previously endured hunger strikes to protest his incarceration. His death adds to the list of brutal crimes committed during Israel's ongoing campaign of violence against Gaza.

Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups hold the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the deaths in its prisons and have renewed their call for international human rights organisations to hold Israel accountable for war crimes and end the atrocities against the Palestinian people.
