Truce in Gaza Holds as First Hostages, Including British Citizen, Set Free

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on Sunday, January 19, 2025, following several delays. The deal, which includes the release of prisoners, was initially stalled due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's demand for a list of the 33 hostages to be freed. After negotiations, the list was provided, and the ceasefire was confirmed.

Among those to be released today are three prisoners, including British citizen Emily Damari. Israel insists that the ceasefire will only fully take effect if Hamas complies with the agreement's terms. Despite the truce, Israeli forces carried out attacks on Gaza earlier in the day. This ceasefire is seen as a crucial step toward ending the 15-month conflict that has claimed over 46,000 Palestinian lives.
