The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor reported that the health of Palestinian prisoners released by Israel as part of a deal during the Gaza ceasefire has seriously worsened due to the poor conditions they endured, including torture and mistreatment.
Most of the released prisoners, including children, showed clear signs of health problems, losing a lot of weight from what seems like deliberate starvation. Some needed urgent medical care, and a few couldn't even recognize their families after being released.
The organization highlighted that Israeli prisons have become places for systematic torture, with many prisoners suffering from physical abuse and bad living conditions. Some prisoners were forced to shave their heads, beaten, and deprived of basic needs like water.
Testimonies from the released prisoners also spoke of long hours of mistreatment, being shackled and insulted during transport, and facing isolation and harsh punishment.
The Euro-Mediterranean Monitor called for international action to stop these crimes, urging governments and international bodies to hold Israel responsible for the abuse, which is seen as torture and illegal detention.
They also called for the immediate release of detained Palestinians and for international organizations to be allowed to visit them.
