Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday evening. Informed Israeli sources expect Trump to insist on implementing the second phase of the prisoner exchange deal and a ceasefire, in exchange for accelerating normalization efforts in the region, particularly between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Sources close to Netanyahu said they anticipate Trump will attempt to trade advancing the full stages of the prisoner exchange deal with a proposal to expand normalization between Israel and regional countries, while offering guarantees related to countering Iran's nuclear program.
Amid the difficulty of implementing Trump's plan to relocate Gaza residents to Egypt and Jordan, Israel has proposed a model similar to the Tunisia scenario, where Hamas leaders would be expelled from Gaza to other countries, akin to how the PLO was moved from Beirut to Tunisia. This could then pave the way for ending the war.
Meanwhile, ministers, lawmakers, and activists from Netanyahu's Likud party have signed a petition urging him not to accept a ceasefire or abandon the goal of destroying Hamas, in an effort to help him resist Trump's pressure.
