Two Israeli soldiers were killed and six others wounded in a shooting near Tayasir, east of Tubas in the occupied West Bank, on Tuesday morning. Israeli military radio confirmed that eight soldiers were injured in total, with two succumbing to their wounds. The wounded were evacuated by military helicopters.
Israeli media reported that the attack occurred near an area where Israeli forces were conducting operations as part of their ongoing aggression in the northern West Bank. The assailant, a Palestinian, engaged in an armed confrontation with soldiers before being killed. He had reportedly reached a military checkpoint, barricaded himself in a watchtower, and opened fire.
Following the attack, the Israeli army sealed off the Tayasir checkpoint and deployed reinforcements while conducting searches in the area. Hamas praised the operation as an act of resistance against the escalating Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank.
In recent weeks, the Israeli army has intensified its military operations in the West Bank, using tactics rarely employed in the region. Armoured troop carriers, typically deployed in combat, have been sent to Tubas and Jenin for the first time since 2002. Since the beginning of the year, 70 Palestinians, including 10 children, have been killed in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
