Tunis Protesters Call for Closure of US Embassy Amid Gaza Genocide Outrage

Tunisian citizens gathered in large numbers on Saturday 19 April in the heart of the capital to demand the closure of the United States embassy in Tunis. The protest, held in front of the Municipal Theatre, was sparked by Washington’s unwavering military support for Israel amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Chanting powerful slogans such as “Resistance, no peace, no compromise” and “The martyr left a will: there is no alternative to arms,” demonstrators expressed their outrage over the relentless attacks on the besieged enclave. The protest was organised by the civil society group Ansar Palestine, which called for a clear and uncompromising stance against Zionist aggression.

Participants decried US complicity in what they described as war crimes against the Palestinian people. “Washington is a partner in the bloodshed in Gaza,” many shouted, demanding the immediate expulsion of the American ambassador and the closure of the embassy.

According to local organisers, the protest was not only a condemnation of the ongoing war on Gaza but also a call for accountability. “When the US continues to arm and support Israel, it becomes responsible for the mass killings of women and children,” said one demonstrator.

Since the beginning of the war, Israeli attacks—fully backed by the United States—have left over 168,000 Palestinians killed or injured, with women and children making up the majority of the victims. With Gaza under an intensified blockade, its population now faces starvation, disease, and the total collapse of basic services.

As anger rises across the Arab world, Tunisia’s protest adds to a growing chorus of calls for justice, dignity, and immediate international action.
