Sinn Féin Leader Calls for Sanctions and Arms Embargo on Israel over “Genocide” in Gaza

In a forceful statement, Declan Kearney, National Chairperson of Sinn Féin, has called for full economic sanctions and an arms embargo against Israel, accusing it of committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza under the cover of its ongoing occupation.

Kearney described the Israeli assault as a “horrific crime against our shared humanity,” and urged the international community to respond decisively to what he called the Israeli occupation’s repeated and systematic violations of international law and human rights. He condemned the silence of Western governments, warning that their failure to hold Israel accountable represents a profound moral and political failure.

“The Palestinian people have suffered decades of dispossession, displacement, and apartheid under Israeli occupation. Their fundamental right to self-determination has been continuously denied,” Kearney said, highlighting the devastating human toll of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and across the occupied Palestinian territories.

He sharply criticised the roles of the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, describing their ongoing support for Israel and refusal to act as “a shameful betrayal of human dignity.” Without sustained international pressure—including economic sanctions and a complete arms embargo—he warned that the Israeli occupation would persist in its violent policies with impunity. Kearney reaffirmed Sinn Féin’s full support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement as a non-violent tool to push for justice and accountability.

Kearney also called for a comprehensive diplomatic effort rooted in international law, justice, and human rights. He reiterated support for a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, urging the global community to uphold the principles of the UN Charter.

“Only by enforcing international law and bringing an end to the Israeli occupation can a just and lasting peace be secured for the people of Palestine and the wider region,” he concluded.
