French football legend Eric Cantona has condemned Israel following the death of Palestinian star Suleiman Al-Obeid, shot while waiting for humanitarian aid in Rafah, southern Gaza. Posting on Instagram, Cantona described the assault as “genocide” and called for Palestine to be freed, highlighting the tragic loss of the player nicknamed the “Pelé of Palestine.
Al-Obeid, former captain of Palestine’s national team and Shabab Al-Shati Club, scored over 100 career goals and earned renown for his speed, skill, and leadership. His iconic bicycle-kick goal against Yemen in 2010 remains a symbol of Palestinian sporting pride.
The killing has provoked international outrage, drawing attention to the broader impact of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, which have devastated communities, infrastructure, and cultural life, including sports. Al-Obeid’s death marks not just the loss of a football legend, but the silencing of a symbol of resilience and hope for Palestinians.
