Israeli Forces Suffer Losses in Gaza Ambush

A sudden and intense confrontation in Gaza City’s Zeitoun district left Israeli forces reeling, with one soldier killed, at least eleven seriously wounded, and four reported missing after an ambush by Palestinian resistance fighters. According to reports, the Israeli unit faced heavy fire, including anti-tank rockets and machine-gun attacks, which disrupted their operation and forced helicopters to evacuate casualties under relentless fire.

Hebrew sources indicate the Israeli military invoked the controversial “Hannibal Directive,” a protocol that authorises killing soldiers rather than allowing them to be captured. Analysts say the use of this measure underscores Israel’s anxiety over the political and strategic fallout of any soldier falling into Palestinian hands. Meanwhile, Abu Obeida, spokesperson for the resistance’s military wing, warned that continued Israeli ground operations could lead to further captures, while asserting that fighters remain highly motivated and prepared.

The incident comes amid a broader campaign of destruction in Gaza, with civilians enduring relentless attacks and mass displacement. Since the conflict escalated on 7 October 2023, Israeli military fatalities have reached at least 455, highlighting the ongoing toll of a war that has now entered its 695th day. The ambush serves as a stark reminder of the resilience of local fighters facing a heavily armed occupation.
