Thousands gathered in Gaza City today to protest Israeli threats of mass evacuation, with tribal leaders, healthcare officials, and families of the deceased joining a “shroud march” to assert their determination to remain in their homes. Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and banners reading, “We will not leave” and “Steadfast in Gaza until the soul departs,” signalling defiance in the face of continuing bombardment and killings.
The march comes after Israeli authorities announced evacuation orders for Gaza City as a precursor to what they describe as a “major new offensive,” following nearly two years of sustained attacks. Social media campaigns using hashtags such as #WeWillNotLeave and #NotLeaving amplified the residents’ message, reflecting widespread resolve to resist forced displacement and preserve their land.
Despite ongoing threats, the protesters emphasised that remaining in Gaza is an inalienable right. Their message is clear: no matter the risks, they will stay and protect their homes, asserting dignity and resilience against a campaign that has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands since October 2023.
