The United Nations has demanded an immediate end to attacks on the Freedom Flotilla sailing towards Gaza to deliver aid and challenge Israel’s blockade. The High Commissioner for Human Rights called for an independent investigation, stressing that the targeting of civilian vessels carrying humanitarian assistance is indefensible.
Activists on board reported being struck by flares, explosives, and suspected chemical agents as they neared Gaza’s shores. Off the coast of Greece, drones were said to have dropped unidentified objects, causing explosions and communications blackouts. One vessel, the Spectre, was hit in the early hours of Wednesday, underscoring the escalating risks faced by those attempting to deliver relief.
Despite the dangers, the flotilla, which set sail from Barcelona and now consists of over 50 boats off Crete, continues its mission to challenge what campaigners describe as an unlawful and suffocating blockade. The deployment of an Italian naval frigate to assist the convoy highlights mounting international concern as the flotilla presses forward in defiance of threats and attacks.
