Palestinian journalist Amal Mohammed Al Shamali has been killed in Gaza, bringing the number of media workers who have lost their lives during the ongoing genocidal war to 261, according to the territory’s Government Media Office. Al Shamali, who worked as a correspondent for Qatar Radio, was killed amid continuing Israeli bombardment of the enclave. Her death adds to the mounting losses among journalists attempting to document daily life and destruction across the besieged territory.
Palestinian officials say the growing toll among reporters reflects a troubling pattern affecting those covering the events of the genocidal war from within Gaza. In a statement released on Sunday, the media office said the repeated killing of journalists has severely undermined the ability of local and international audiences to understand the realities faced by civilians in the territory. With newsrooms destroyed and reporters working under extreme conditions, the loss of each journalist further weakens independent reporting from the ground.
Authorities in Gaza strongly condemned the killing and called on international press organisations, including the International Federation of Journalists and the Arab Journalists Union, to adopt a firm position regarding the deaths of reporters in the enclave. Palestinian officials also urged international legal institutions to investigate the incidents and pursue accountability, warning that the continued loss of journalists threatens both press freedom and the documentation of the genocidal war.
