Israel has announced the suspension of humanitarian supplies destined for Gaza and coordinated by UNICEF, citing what it described as a thwarted smuggling attempt within aid consignments arriving from Egypt. The decision, confirmed on 17 March, halts the entry of essential goods into a territory already facing severe shortages amid the ongoing genocidal war.

According to Israeli authorities, the move follows the detection of items allegedly concealed within hygiene kits at the Kerem Shalom crossing, the primary checkpoint through which humanitarian assistance is inspected before entering the enclave. Officials stated that the suspension would remain in place pending the outcome of a full investigation and an official response from the UN agency.

Humanitarian officials have warned that the consequences could be immediate and far-reaching. The OCHA stressed that Kerem Shalom is currently the sole operational entry point for both aid and commercial goods into Gaza, underscoring the urgency of reopening additional crossings. Inside the territory, conditions remain described as catastrophic, with acute shortages of food, medical supplies and basic necessities continuing to affect the population.

Despite the restrictions, aid agencies reported limited success in retrieving some supplies already inside Gaza, including food parcels, medical items and essential care kits. However, the broader interruption threatens to deepen an already critical humanitarian situation, as access remains tightly constrained and needs continue to escalate.
