The father of British activist Hasnain Jafer has spoken of his relief and pride following his son’s release from Israeli detention after being held during the interception of an aid flotilla bound for Gaza. The vessel was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international initiative seeking to deliver humanitarian supplies amid the worsening conditions in the territory affected by the ongoing genocidal war.
Jafer, 22, from Birmingham, was among several international activists detained after Israeli forces boarded the flotilla in international waters and prevented it from reaching its destination. The incident has reignited debate over restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza and the role of civil initiatives attempting to deliver assistance.
Speaking after his son’s return, Jeffrey Jafer described him as “one soul in a trillion,” praising his determination and commitment to standing in solidarity with civilians in Gaza. He said the experience reflected a wider movement of young activists who continue to engage with the humanitarian situation through non-violent action.
The Global Sumud Flotilla brought together campaigners from several countries with the stated aim of highlighting the humanitarian situation in Gaza and attempting to deliver aid to a population facing severe shortages under the blockade.
