Abu Safiya Pleads for Urgent Release from Rakefet Prison

SAFA- Physicians for Human Rights–Israel said that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, urged his lawyer to use “every possible means” to secure his release from Rakefet Prison and end his solitary confinement after he was assaulted by Israeli prison guards.

According to the organization, Abu Safiya, who has been detained since December 2024 without indictment, told his lawyer during a recent legal visit that guards beat him following the lawyer’s previous visit, leaving him with a bleeding injury to one of his fingers. He also said he has remained in solitary confinement since the incident.

The organization said masked guards remained near the meeting room during the visit, undermining the confidentiality of lawyer-client communication.

It added that Abu Safiya had undergone medical examinations and X-rays but was not informed of the results. Prison authorities also stopped providing him with pain medication despite his continuing health problems.

Physicians for Human Rights said the testimony contradicts claims presented by Israeli authorities to the Supreme Court that there were no indications his life was at risk.

The organization called for urgent intervention, including an independent medical and legal assessment, guarantees for his safety, his transfer from Rakefet Prison, and immediate access to necessary medical care. It also requested that he be examined by an ophthalmologist and that his prescription glasses be returned.
