SAFA — Hamas announced on Monday that the Movement has elected Khalil al-Hayya as chairman of its Political Bureau, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.
The decision was announced in a brief statement following the conclusion of internal elections conducted by the Movement's Shura Council.
Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader, was killed during clashes with Israeli occupation forces in Rafah amid Israel's genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.
Following his killing, Hamas transferred leadership responsibilities to a collective council pending the outcome of the internal elections.
The Movement had previously indicated that a second round of voting would be required after the initial round failed to produce a winner.
The final results, announced on Monday, confirmed al-Hayya as the Movement's new Political Bureau chief.
