Prisoners’ Media Office: Israel Holds 1,316 Gaza Detainees Under "Unlawful Combatant" Designation

SAFA — The Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office said Israeli authorities continue to conceal the actual number of Palestinians detained from the Gaza Strip, with hundreds held under the designation of "unlawful combatants."

The office said Israeli authorities have classified 1,316 Gaza detainees under the "unlawful combatant" designation, while officially acknowledging the detention of 1,468 other Palestinians from the Strip. It stressed that these figures do not represent the total number of Gaza detainees currently held in Israeli custody.

According to the office, the number of documented arrests in the occupied West Bank and occupied Jerusalem since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza has exceeded 25,600, excluding detainees from the Gaza Strip.

The office said prisoner exchange agreements resulted in the release of 1,024 Palestinian detainees during the second phase and 1,700 during the third phase. An additional 636 detainees were released following the conclusion of the exchange phases through 27 July 2026.

The office also documented 52 Palestinian prisoners whose identities have been confirmed after they died in Israeli custody. It further reported that the bodies of 360 Palestinians were transferred without identification records, while only one body—that of Ismail Khader from Gaza—has been officially returned to his family.

The office further reported that 80 detainees from Gaza had already been serving prison sentences before the outbreak of the war.

It said the figures reflect the continued lack of transparency surrounding the detention of Palestinians from Gaza, particularly those held under the "unlawful combatant" designation, which allows for prolonged detention under a separate legal framework.
