SAFA -  Three Palestinians were injured on Saturday morning after Israeli occupation forces opened live fire in the northern outskirts of Hamad City, south of the Gaza Strip, according to local sources, as displaced families living in nearby tent camps face repeated shootings and growing danger.

Thousands of displaced Palestinians are sheltering in camps located near Israeli military towers, surveillance equipment, and military positions overlooking the area. Residents say the proximity of the camps to these positions leaves them exposed to direct gunfire, even while inside their tents.

A witness told Safa news agency that the area had been relatively quiet before residents were suddenly confronted with heavy live fire.

The three victims were injured in quick succession, according to the witness. Similar incidents have reportedly occurred in the area, with Palestinians previously injured inside and around the camps as a result of repeated gunfire.

The shooting has become part of what residents describe as a daily pattern of intimidation around what remains of the Hamad City towers.

“The military towers and surveillance equipment opposite us do not stop firing, especially at night, whether there is movement inside the camp or not,” the witness said.

Displaced Families Living Under Threat

For displaced families, the danger has become intertwined with the harsh conditions of life inside the camps.

Amani Abu Taim, a displaced Palestinian, told Safa that families are forced to remain on the ground for hours whenever Israeli occupation forces move around the towers or surveillance aircraft become active over the area.

“When Israeli snipers begin moving on the towers or the quadcopters become active in the sky, we have to crawl and lie flat on the ground inside our tents for hours, fearing the gunfire,” she said.

“Having to lie on the dirt all night to avoid sniper fire directed at you from the towers and military surveillance equipment is hell,” Abu Taim added.

Mahmoud Baraka, another displaced Palestinian, said there were virtually no safe options for families facing near-daily injuries in his camp and a neighboring one.

“We live through this tragedy every day. There is no solution,” Baraka told Safa.

He said relocating to al-Mawasi would not necessarily provide safety, as displaced families there also face Israeli attacks.

“Even in al-Mawasi, there is the same shelling. The tents there are also being targeted with missiles,” he said.

According to data documented by Gaza’s Government Media Office, hundreds of Palestinian civilians have been killed or injured in border areas and locations adjacent to the rubble of military towers and positions as a result of direct sniper fire and shootings.

Official reports have also documented Palestinians killed and injured while inside temporary shelters, including children and entire families, as Israeli forces have targeted displacement camps and tents with gunfire.

The repeated targeting of areas where displaced Palestinians are sheltering has further deepened the humanitarian catastrophe created by the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza.

For families living in tents during the summer, the threat of gunfire adds another layer of insecurity to shelters that were meant to provide protection from the Israeli genocide but have instead become places where residents say they fear for their lives day and night.
