Fears Grow for Detained Gaza Doctor Hussam Abu Safiya’s Life

SAFA- The Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, warned of escalating fears for the life of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya amid reports that he was assaulted inside the detention center and sustained injuries to his eye, head, and chest.

Al-Bursh stated that this information, combined with Abu Safiya's continued detention and the absence of an independent medical examination and proper healthcare, makes his health status a "source of grave concern" that demands urgent action rather than delayed statements.

He held the Israeli occupation forces fully responsible for Abu Safiya's life and safety, demanding an urgent, independent, and comprehensive medical examination for him; ensuring he receives the necessary treatment; and protecting him from torture and ill-treatment.

Furthermore, he demanded that competent international and human rights organizations be granted access to Abu Safiya to inspect his detention conditions, ensuring verification of his health status and confinement circumstances.

Al-Bursh called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations, and international medical and human rights institutions to take immediate and effective action. He warned that time is a critical factor given the existing fears for the doctor's life.

He emphasized that continued delay in providing medical care and an independent examination could increase the threats to his safety, stressing that "every hour of delay could mean more danger to his life."
