SAFA - The Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission said that living and humanitarian conditions inside “Janut” Israeli Prison continue to deteriorate dangerously, amid ongoing punitive measures and restrictions imposed on detainees, who are being denied the 

most basic requirements for a dignified life guaranteed by international conventions and norms concerning their rights.

In a report issued on Wednesday, following visits to a number of detainees and interviews with them inside the prison, the Commission said prison authorities allow the washing machine to be used only once every 12 to 14 days. Underwear and outer clothing are also often not replaced, further worsening the detainees’ suffering amid the harsh conditions in which they are being held.

The Commission added that detainees are continuously subjected to beatings and repression, while being deprived of adequate healthcare and the minimum necessary personal supplies.

It confirmed that overcrowding inside the cells has reached severe levels, with some rooms housing 12 detainees despite having only 10 beds, forcing two detainees to sleep on the floor. Prison authorities also continue to impose punitive measures, including forcing detainees to sleep on their “stomachs” and removing their mattresses after the morning headcount until the evening headcount.

The Commission noted that the sections lack even the most basic necessities, including razors and nail clippers, which are shared among all detainees.

The Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission renewed its call on international and humanitarian organizations, foremost among them the International Committee of the Red Cross, to assume their legal and humanitarian responsibilities and take urgent action to halt the ongoing violations against detainees and ensure that they receive the minimum rights guaranteed under international laws and conventions.

According to accounts provided by detainees during the visits, those currently held in the prison sections include Mohammed Mustafa Juhain, Fadi Nihad Al-Suwais, Ali Hamad “Abu Hussam,” Saed Aloueh, Fadi Al-Kurdi, Ahmed Nasser, Haitham Abed, Osama Al-Masri, Ali Abu Aita, Salah Dahlees, Ismail Hous, and Sufyan Al-Asha.
