SAFA- The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) demanded immediate international action to stop Israeli plans to establish a wing for Palestinian prisoners serving death sentences, including a place for executions.
PPS President Abdullah Al-Zaghari said designating the wing marks a shift from incitement and legislation to practical steps toward carrying out death sentences against Palestinian prisoners. He said the move is part of an escalating campaign targeting prisoners’ rights and lives.
Al-Zaghari said the Israeli Knesset approved a law in March allowing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of killing by military courts. Under the law, he said, the sentence is mandatory unless the court finds exceptional circumstances warranting a reduction to life imprisonment.
Israel 24 reported Tuesday, citing the office of Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, that work was underway to designate the first wing for Palestinian prisoners sentenced to death. The wing is to include a facility for carrying out the sentences.
Ben-Gvir appeared in a video filmed at the construction site, saying the wing for prisoners sentenced to death and the execution facility was beginning to take shape.
Al-Zaghari described the preparations as a crime against humanity, saying Palestinian prisoners have for years faced killing, torture, ill-treatment, and medical neglect.
According to Palestinian and Israeli rights organizations, more than 9,400 Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli prisons, including 92 women and more than 370 children, under conditions marked by torture, starvation, and medical neglect.
Al-Zaghari said more than 100 Palestinian prisoners have been killed inside Israeli prisons as a result of torture, assaults, violence, malnutrition, and disease. He held the international community responsible for allowing the violations to continue and urged immediate action to protect Palestinian prisoners.
He also accused Ben-Gvir of seeking revenge against Palestinian prisoners, citing his repeated raids on prison sections and cells. Al-Zaghari said Israeli policies aim to strip prisoners of basic rights guaranteed under international law.
