SAFA — An Israeli court has sentenced a Palestinian child from occupied Jerusalem to 45 days in prison and imposed a 2,000-shekel fine amid continuing arrests and prosecutions of Palestinian minors in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

The child, identified as Ismail Muammar al-Khatib from the town of Hizma, northeast of occupied Jerusalem, was sentenced on September 10, according to Palestinian sources.

The reports did not specify al-Khatib’s age or the charges against him.

The sentence comes amid growing concern over the detention of Palestinian children by Israeli authorities. According to the latest figures from the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club, at least 370 Palestinian children and minors are currently held in Israeli prisons, including Ofer, Megiddo and Damon.

They are among more than 9,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees currently held by Israel.

Palestinian prisoners’ organizations documented 276 arrests of children in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem during the first half of 2026 alone.

Rights groups have repeatedly documented harsh conditions facing Palestinian children in Israeli detention, including interrogation, inadequate access to food and medical care, and administrative detention without charge or trial.

Palestinian prisoners’ rights groups say the growing number of child detainees reflects the broader escalation in Israeli arrest campaigns across occupied Jerusalem and the West Bank.
