SAFA- The Trump administration is preparing a major $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel that would include 40,000 powerful 2,000-pound bombs, even as Israeli attacks continue to kill Palestinians in Gaza despite the ceasefire.

According to The Washington Post, the proposed package includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, as well as 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads designed for hardened targets. The newspaper described it as the largest single sale of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel in recent years.

The deal would be financed largely through U.S. Foreign Military Financing, under which American taxpayer funds are provided to Israel to purchase U.S.-made weapons.

MK-84 bombs are among the most powerful conventional munitions in Western arsenals. Their explosions can cause extensive destruction, penetrate metal and concrete and send lethal fragments over large distances, raising serious concerns over their use in densely populated areas.

Israel has repeatedly used 2,000-pound bombs in Gaza and Lebanon. Their use in Gaza has drawn international criticism because of the enormous destructive impact of such weapons in densely populated civilian areas, including locations Israel had designated as safe zones.

The proposed sale has been informally notified to relevant congressional committees but has not yet been finalized. Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen has said he intends to build opposition to the package.

The Biden administration paused one shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel in spring 2024 amid concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza. President Donald Trump reversed that decision shortly after returning to office in January 2025, restoring Israel’s access to the weapons.

The proposed sale comes as Palestinians in Gaza continue to be killed in Israeli attacks despite the ceasefire. According to Gaza health authorities, at least 73,789 Palestinians have been killed and 174,798 wounded since October 7, 2023.

Since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025, Gaza health authorities say at least 1,375 Palestinians have been killed and 4,686 injured, while hundreds of bodies have been recovered from beneath the rubble.

The planned transfer would therefore deepen U.S. military support for Israel at a time when the use of American-supplied weapons in Gaza continues to face scrutiny over civilian casualties and the devastating destruction of the enclave.
