Europeans for al-Quds: Jerusalem in May: two killed, 1,256 injuries, and 466 detainees

The Israeli occupation authorities escalated the perpetration of human rights violations in Jerusalem during May 2021, as an Israeli attempt to impose new incidents in the Damascus Gate area leading to the Old City and Al-Aqsa Mosque emerged. The Jerusalemites responded to these measures with daily confrontations that left dozens of injuries and detainees.

As a result of the Israeli escalation in the city of Jerusalem, a military attack erupted in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 255 Palestinians, including 66 children and 39 women, and wounding nearly two thousand others, in addition to the extensive destruction of homes, civilian and economic facilities and infrastructure.

In the monthly report monitoring the Israeli attacks in Jerusalem, Europeans for al-Quds monitored the Israeli army’s perpetration of 2879 violations varied between 14 types of human rights violations. The majority of these violations were complex. Injuries constitute the highest percentage of these violations, with a 43.6%, followed by arrests with a 16.2%.

During this month, Europeans for al-Quds monitored 247 shooting incidents and direct attacks by the Israeli army in the neighborhoods of occupied Jerusalem, which resulted in the kill of two citizens, one of whom was a child, and the injury of 1,256 others, including about 20 journalists and several children and women, in excessive use of force without any justification, especially during the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque and its courtyards. Dozens also suffered from suffocation from tear gas. Many cases were recorded in which citizens were subjected to beatings and extreme violence by the occupation forces.

In addition, 360 incursions were carried out into towns and neighborhoods of Jerusalem, during which 466 citizens were arrested. Among the detainees were a number of children, women and journalists,

Also, several summonses and the imposition of house arrest on many citizens were recorded.

Moreover, Europeans for al-Quds team also monitored that two demolition notices were delivered to two Palestinians, and several court sessions related to the displacement of Jerusalemites from Sheikh Jarrah and the Silwan neighborhood were held in light of the accelerating efforts of the Israeli occupation authorities to impose demographic change in the city of Jerusalem, and for this it employs all its governmental, political and security arms. On the other hand, it gives the settlers and their settlement associations a free hand to control the largest possible number of properties in the city.

During May, about 1,247 settlers participated in storming Al-Aqsa Mosque, while thousands of others participated in the flags march that stormed the Damascus Gate area and was the spark that ignited a military attack in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli occupation police continued to implement the policy of deportation from Al-Aqsa Mosque or the city of Jerusalem, and during the month of May, the report documented the deportation of 81 Palestinians from it for periods that varied between one week and six months.

The settlers also continued to carry out attacks against citizens in occupied Jerusalem, as 58 attacks were carried out by settlers, including assault, shooting and burning of property of citizens.
