The New Arab said in a recent statement that Hamas condemned Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American Congresswoman, for a tweet in which she compared their actions to those of Israel and the US.
"We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity. We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban," she tweeted.
Hamas Spokesman Basem Naim said that Omar's comments were odd as she equated between the oppressed and the oppressor; she equated between the Palestinians' resistance, the Israeli crimes in Palestine, and the US aggression in Afghanistan.
It said that Israel launched a deadly 11-day assault on Gaza, resulting in 254 Palestinians killed, including 66 children and thousands injured.
It mentioned that the conflict started when Hamas launched rockets at Israel in response to Israel forces' attack against the Palestinian worshippers at Jerusalem.
Naim also said that Hamas appreciated Omar's stances in support of justice and the rights of the oppressed around the world. Yet, it is unacceptable to make such an unfair comparison that contradicts with basic norms of justice and international law.
Omar's words were condemned by a group of congresspeople from her own Democratic Party, who said "equating the US and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided."
"The Palestinians have been under the Israeli occupation for more than 14 years and suffering from unbearable conditions of living. We hope that Ilhan Omar and all defenders of Palestinian rights make efforts to provide an accurate description of the situation as this is the starting point to lay the foundations for a fair solution for this prolonged state of injustice and denial of the Palestinians' rights," Naim said.
