Israel ends house arrest of Professor Imad Barghouti

The Israeli occupation authorities on Monday ended the house detention of Professor Imad Ahmed Barghouti from Ramallah by a decision of the Ofer Military Court.

Suhair Assaf, the wife of Professor Barghouti, explained that the Ofer court decided to adopt the period that Barghouti spent in prison, which is 10 and a half months, and to suffice with the 42-day period of house arrest.

She indicated that the occupation released her husband a month and a half ago after he spent 10 and a half months in the occupation's prisons and paid a fine of 5,000 shekels and a 12-month stay of execution for a period of five years.

Under the conditions and threats of the occupation, al-Barghouti was prevented from leaving the walls of his house, and a specific place was assigned to him inside his house that he was prohibited from crossing.

His wife and his sister were obliged to stay with him at home and not leave him under house arrest, because if the occupation forces stormed the house and none of them was there, that would mean paying a large amount as a fine.

The occupation forces had arrested the 53-year-old Palestinian astronomer and physicist, al-Barghouti, on July 16, 2020, at the checkpoint of the town of Anata, northeast of Jerusalem, and on September 3, 2020, transferred him to administrative detention.

Al-Barghouti was previously arrested on December 6, 2015, under penalty of arbitrary administrative detention at the Jordanian Karama crossing, while he was on his way to a scientific conference in the UAE.

He was interrogated during his first arrest for his participation in demonstrations against the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip in 2014.

In 2016, the occupation forces re-arrested him against the background of several Facebook posts to release him nearly two months after his arrest, following an international solidarity campaign by some academics.
