The head of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Committee Qadri Abu Bakr Sunday warned of the seriousness of the hunger striker Maher Akhras’s health condition.
Abu Bakr pointed out that al-Akhras began to gradually lose his vision and hearing abilities and became unable to speak, in addition to dangers threatening his vital organs.
He said in a statement, a copy of which obtained by SAFA, "al-Akhras is approaching the 100th day of his hunger strike, and the Israeli authorities still refuse and procrastinate his release and insist that he must complete his current administrative detention."
He added that al-Akhras refused to end the strike unless the Israeli authorities immediately cancel his administrative detention, or transfer him to a Palestinian hospital in West Bank.
"He knows that the authorities are stalling and can extend his detention again," Abu Bakr underscored.
Moreover, he underscored that the European Union and human rights organizations began to take action and demand his release. Although these demands came late, they are important at this time.
Maher al-Akhras, 49, a father of six children, has been on hunger strike for 97 days, protesting his administrative detention in the Israeli jail.
He was detained on July 27, 2020, and has been sentenced to four months in administrative detention without charge or trial.
