Mladenov: I am very concerned that escalation is imminent

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolai Mladenov, expressed his concern about an imminent escalation in the Gaza Strip.

"While the situation in Gaza deteriorates, there is a rapid increase of COVID19 cases among the population. With a failing health system, no electricity, unemployment soaring, continuing militant activity and closures, I am very concerned that escalation is imminent," Mladenov tweeted on Friday.

He added, "the tightening of closures is making life inside the Strip unbearable. Electricity is down to 3 hours, hospitals barely functioning."

"Palestinian militants must immediately stop the launching of projectiles, incendiary devices. #Israel must restore UN fuel deliveries for electricity."

Mladenov affirmed that "under the current circumstances no mediation efforts to prevent escalation & improve the situation can succeed."

The Israeli forces carried out an attack and bombed different areas across the Gaza Strip at dawn. As a result, the Palestinian resistance threw six rockets to the settlements.

For the fourth day in a row, the Gaza Strip is under the curfew, as part of measures to confront the outbreak of the Coronavirus.
